Legacy Five, a southern gospel group, will perform in Eastern Mennonite High School’s new auditorium on Sunday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. with an opening performance by Karen Knight. Tickets are available at Red Front Supermarket, Family Christian Bookstores, Patchwork Plus, Ruth's Bookstore, Sharon Bookstore, WBTX, and EMHS. Artist Circle: $14 in advance/$16 at the door; General Admission: $12 in advance/$14 at the door. For more information call 540-432-4526.
Gospel Music Extravaganza. EMU will hold its fifth annual Gospel Music Extravaganza at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, in Martin Chapel of the seminary building at EMU. Area church and university gospel choirs - including the Northeast Community Choir, Oak Grove Baptist Church, Men of Zion, Lisa Henderson, EMU Gospel Choir, J.C. Motion from JMU - and others, will present worship and praise music. Admission is free; a free-will offering will be taken. The concert, part of Black History Month observances at EMU, is sponsored by the multicultural services EMHS Spring Spiritual Renewal Week, February 7-11, will be held in the new EMHS auditorium with plenty of extra seating so that all are welcome to attend. The theme will be, “You are a chosen people,” and will be a retrospective look at the history of EMHS as well as a glimpse into the future of EMHS. The week will include drama, music and media presentations detailing the school's history. Each day will feature a different speaker: Mary Deputy Brubaker ('32) on Monday; J. David Yoder, former principal, on Tuesday; Ernie Martin ('63), assistant principal, on Wednesday; Jonathan Bowman ('93), former teacher, on Thursday; and Paul Leaman, principal, on Friday. Chapel times are 8:48-9:28 Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:25-9:55 Tuesday, and 8:00-8:30 Friday.
An ecumenical community worship service, in the Taizé-style, will be held each Wednesday during Lent, from February 9 to March 16, 8:30-9:30 p.m., at Park View Mennonite Church. All are invited to this service of sung prayer, hymns, scripture readings, intercessory prayer, and silence. The worship is patterned after the Taizé community, a Christian community located in a small village in eastern France which has had a significant impact on Christian worship worldwide.
Prayer Fellowship. There will be a World Mission Prayer Fellowship on Thursday, Feb 10, 12:15 -1:15 p.m. in the West Dining Room on the EMU Campus. The special topic this month is “In the wake of the wave, how can we be praying?” Lawrence Yoder will be sharing briefly some insights and perspectives on the tsunami event, growing out of years of mission experience in Indonesia. Our priority, as usual, will be to take the bulk of our time together to pray in small groups for designated regions of the world. Teachers/ students are welcome to bring lunch trays into the dining room.
The Annual VMRC Auxiliary Auction and Meal is scheduled for Friday, March 18 in the Detwiler Auditorium at VMRC. We are in need of items to auction. Suggestions include handcrafted wooden items, antiques, quilts, furniture, gift certificates, etc. Be creative! All proceeds benefit the VMRC community and will be used this year to fund a wheelchair accessible van. If you have any questions you may contact Evie Leichty at 433-4956. The Hunt Family Fiddlers, of Chesapeake, Va., will perform on Sunday, March 20 at 4 p.m. in the EMHS auditorium. An offering will be received to benefit Virginia Mennonite Board of Missions ministries.
