SHEKINAH, a women's a cappella ensemble based in Harrisonburg, will hold auditions for low alto or high soprano voices on September 4 from 4-7 p.m. at Lehman Auditorium. "Shekinah's mission is to share our love for singing & our faith in Jesus Christ. We strive for musical excellence & invite our audiences to worship with us. Though we perform a diverse repertoire, Christ is the center of our identity & ministry as a community of musicians." GUEST LECTURE AT EMU: Norman Wirzba, professor & chair of the philosophy department at Georgetown College in Kentucky, will speak on “Recovering the Sabbath for Everyday” at 8 p.m. on September 7 in Martin Chapel. Wirzba will also present the first Suter Science Seminar of fall semester at 4 p.m. on September 8 in room 104 of Suter Science Center. He will speak on “Gratitude as the Basis for Environmental Ethics.” Admission is free; for more information call 432-4168.


NOTE CHANGE IN TIMES: The Northern District Executive Committee announces an evening in celebration of ministry! On September 10, come to the Tabernacle at Highland Retreat for a potluck fellowship meal at 5:30 p.m. & a worship service at 6:30 p.m, in order to hear testimonies of the ministry of Michael Shenk, retiring overseer, & to celebrate the installation of Clyde Kratz, the new overseer. This invitation is for all Northern District clergy, congregational leadership teams, retired leaders, & members of the congregation that would like to participate.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR MENNOFOLK! Mennonite folk musicians will appear in concert on Friday, October 13, in downtown Harrisonburg & Saturday, October 14, on EMU’s campus, in conjunction with Eastern Mennonite University’s annual Homecoming celebration. Over the Rhine will also give a concert on October 14 at 9 p.m. in Lehman Auditorium. Tickets are available through the EMU Box Office, 432-4582.


HARVEST DAY AT CROSSROADS: On Saturday, September 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CrossRoads (the Valley Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center) is sponsoring its annual Harvest Day, featuring special activities for children and storytelling events for all ages. Activities include:

  • riding in a horse-drawn carriage

  • painting pumpkins and gourds

  • making and tossing darts made from corncobs

  • grinding corn and feeding it to chickens

  • petting barnyard babies

  • boiling molasses from sorghum cane syrup

  • pressing cider from apples

  • sawing logs with a crosscut saw

  • watching thread being spun from flax and wool

  • bed covers being quilted and woven

  • ails and clothes hooks being crafted by blacksmiths

  • listening to master storytellers and gifted musicians.

  • Tasty homemade foods and drinks will be available. The entrance fee is $8 per carload.


    EASTERN MENNONITE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is looking for a part-time Spanish teacher. Three classes meet twice a week, making teaching time 3 hours per week. The teacher would be instructing kindergarten through fifth graders. If interested, please contact Maria Archer at 833-4015.
