Name that couple
--Dawn Mast

It's time for everyone's favorite game, Name That Couple! The object of the game is to read the clues that describe the dating, proposal and wedding details of some of the couples at Zion. Then, using the list of couples, see if you can match each couple to their story.

In the process you'll get to know some of the Mr. and Mrs. in our congregation as well as pick up some romantic hints.

Your answers should be emailed to Dawn Mast at themast@juno.com or written down and given to Dawn by February 15. There will be a prize given to the person who correctly matches each couple to their story. The answers will be posted on the small bulletin board in the foyer on February16th. So, have fun and happy matching!

_____ 1. First date--her house for Christmas dinner. Second date--New Year's Day dinner at his house. Another date--a dinner date 30 miles away. On the way home he started singing, and as she joined in she knew this was an on-going duet.

_____ 2. He came to her for a haircut. He would serenade her with his guitar under her bedroom window. She sewed a suit for him and he decided he wanted her to cut his hair for life.

_____ 3. Their first date was supposed to be a canoeing trip at Switzer lake, but a rainstorm had them seeking shelter under the canoe (when it was out of the water of course). Exactly one year from that date, he arranged for friends to have a picnic waiting at that same lake, and he proposed. Exactly one year later they got married at Martin Chapel and surprised everyone by greeting the guests as they arrived for the wedding.

_____ 4. They got engaged at Silver Lake in Dayton. The evening before their wedding it snowed 38 inches and the wedding had to be postponed for two days.

_____ 5. They met at Lancaster Mennonite High School and started dating their senior year. When he went off to EMC she was working at a bank and they had to drive three and half hours to visit each other. On one of their weekend visits, he proposed at their favorite restaurant-Spankys!

_____ 6. They are still working for the same church organization they worked for 53 years ago when they first met. Thirteen orange crates were what they used for furniture to set up housekeeping. Their first apartment was right up against an Amish hitching post.

_____ 7. On the morning of their wedding, one of them played 18 holes of golf and the other got a phone call from a professional football player. They were married by the father of two Zion attendees.

_____ 8. He took her to Skyline Drive to propose, but just as he reached for the ring she said she was cold and had a headache so he took her home. Later, he finally got to "pop the question" on the hill behind the Campus Center. Before the rehearsal dinner he accidentally ran into her parents vehicle and dented it. When they tried to leave for their honeymoon, the car wouldn't start.

_____ 9. They met during a group function at the cabin in West Virginia where his Grandmother was born. They spent time talking on the porch and realized they had the same things in common, including dreams for the future. They kept running into each other after that and within a few weeks were dating and talking about being together forever. The wedding attire was denim.

_____ 10. When they went to talk to her parents about getting married, they had to get her father out of bed, but he came downstairs smiling. There weren't any hotel reservations made for their honeymoon so they drove for a while and had to check at about two places before they found one with a vacancy.

_____ 11. One interesting memory from their honeymoon was a scene in downtown Memphis. Twice a day a group of ducks paraded to and from an indoor fountain at the Peabody Hotel. The last time this couple checked, the ducks are still parading and they (the couple) are still waddling in marital bliss.

_____ 12. Their paths first crossed at age 15 at Laurelville Mennonite Camp where he secretly vowed to someday get a date with her in spite of the fact that she was oblivious to him. Later in college, she vowed to her roommate that she'd never marry him because he was too much like a brother. They later did some serious courting in a 1931 Ford Roadster. Their first home was in the Bronx, New York followed by 16 different homes in the first 12 years of being married.

_____ 13. Goshen College's first co-ed floor house church is where they met. The Devil's Potato Patch was the site of their engagement. Their wedding ceremony took place during the regular Sunday morning service at her church.

_____14. They started dating after a blind date to see the musical, Oklahoma. They were engaged after three months and married three months later. He didn’t meet her parents until after they were engaged. They drove to Florida for their honeymoon in a pink Mercury.

A daughter’s perspective
--Emily Myers

On Saturday girls club had a father/ daughter mystery supper. The boys club served everyone. There were four courses to eat. No one knew what food they were getting!

When course one came some people got lasagna without silverware. I was one of them! I had to eat mine with my fingers. Some of us figured out some of the food items. Tennis balls were peas, cool down was ice cream, dog pile was lasagna, hole in one was a life saver, and much more!

As you can tell it was a sports theme. We were full after four courses! After that we had entertainment. Some of the fathers and daughters did a skit. They were funny! We had lots of door prizes! After all of that we each got a balloon! Then everyone went home. Girls club was really fun!

Fresh pork BBQ sandwiches
--Grant Stoltzfus

The Junior MYF is having a Pork BBQ sandwich fundraiser Saturday, February 8th. To place an order contact a Junior MYF member or Grant Stoltzfus. A sign up sheet is also on the MYF bulletin board at church.

The pig is being roasted at the church so you can pickup your fresh Pork BBQ sandwiches at12 o'clock at the church, or have them delivered in the afternoon. The cost is $2.50 for each sandwich.

Father/Daughter mystery supper
--Marci Myers and Susan Stoltzfus

Girls' Club girls and their Dads gathered in Zion's fellowship hall Saturday evening, January 19 for a special Father/Daughter Mystery Supper! Our theme was "Have a Ball"!

When guests first arrived we treated them to crackers, cheese and punch. The punch had a special 3-D ice ring created by Amy Shrock with small plastic sports players and cheerleaders frozen into the ice! Tables were decorated with sports confetti, streamers, small sports balls, "have a ball" placemats, party favors, and ball-shaped candles. Several bouquets of helium balloons added to our festive atmosphere, thanks to Dabney Vaccaro!

Our photographer, Velma Stauffer, took photos of each father and daughter before they were seated. Fathers and daughters in attendance were: Dane and Grace Byers, Ed and Anna Gant, Larion and Madeline Hostetler, Daryl, Kristen and Emily Myers, Rob, Katherine and Rebecca Pence, Tony and Olivia Resto, Jimmy and Chloe Shrock, John and Kaitlin Stauffer, Grant and Hannah Stoltzfus, Joe, Heather, Joslyn and Emily Vaccaro.

After a welcome and prayer, fathers and daughters selected items from the following four course menu: Ball 2, Dog Pile, Red Card, Scramble, Hole-in-one, Admission Fee, Tennis Balls, Cool Down, Kick Off, Pocket, Off Sides, Snow Balls. After all orders were completed, the mystery of the items ordered began to be revealed as Boys' Club servers brought out one course at a time! Fathers and daughters were in for some surprises! Some even happened to order ice cream (cool down) for their first course! Silverware was included in this list as well, and some didn't get their spoon (off sides) or their fork (pocket---napkin folded into a pocket with fork inside the pocket) until their last course! Ask Joe Vaccaro! It was funny to watch people eating lasagna (dog pile) and jell-O salad (red card) with their fingers!

Behind the scenes, Marci Myers, Amy Shrock, Velma Stauffer, Susan Stoltzfus and Dabney Vaccaro worked in the kitchen getting plates filled with correct orders! Boys' Club members Benjamin Emswiler, Zachary Emswiler, David Pence, Drew Shrock, and Philip Yoder did a super job of serving the group! Thanks boys!

After our four course meal we enjoyed some entertainment by fathers and daughters. "Who's on First" was read by Grant and Hannah Stoltzfus. Heather, Joslyn and Emily Vaccaro played an instrumental piece with bassoon and violins. Jimmy and Chloe Shrock sang a duet. And John and Kaitlin Stauffer presented an original drama depicting "Kaitlin's Dance Studio" with John taking dance lessons from Kaitlin. (It's on video, by the way!)

We had a wonderful evening with a lot of laughter! Thanks to the mothers who provided food for our meal: Lori Gant, Ruby Hostetler, Celah Pence, Steph Resto, Amy Shrock, Velma Stauffer, and Dabney Vaccaro. Thanks, Dads, for taking the time to have a special date with your daughters! And thanks Boys' Club for willingly serving the mystery food to the girls and their fathers! With everyone's help, we all "had a ball"!!

Continuing the challenge
--Sarah Bixler

On Sunday, January 19, I challenged us as adults in the congregation to pray for a specific youth in our church. Your response was encouraging to both myself as youth coordinator and to the youth who watched you rise to stand with them.

Your prayers are an invaluable source of empowerment for youth who are searching for direction in their lives. Please continue to pray for them, and offer words of affirmation for their gifts as you experience them in congregational life.

???Did you know???
· An article on Ben Risser was featured on the EMU Website and the Daily News Record.

· Ben Emswiler is playing Rockingham County Recreation League basketball. He is playing in two games a week at John C. Myers. Ben is also a Star Student at John C. Myers Elementary School, noted for being “Responsible.”

· Katherine Goins has composed an opera for children? It is based on the creation story from Genesis. “Let There Be Light” has delightful lyrics and the music keeps you wondering what will come next. It’s rhythmic, melodic and sometimes syncopated. I loved it. This is a work that took a couple of years to complete and was first performed in her home, with just a few singers and characters, to honor her father on his 75th birthday. Katherine gave Retha and me the privilege of viewing a tape they made. I hope to be able to see and hear a full-fledged performance sometime before my “Pearly Gate” event.--J. P. Alger

· Amy Rush and Jenni Piper attended the Virginia Conference Youth Sponsor Retreat in Williamsburg January 17-19.

Home with Amy

--Amy Shrock

Not many of the winter months are left, and I didn't get my winter projects finished. They will have to wait until next year. I am getting ready to work in the garden again, there is nothing like fresh vegetables from the garden!

My mom and dad visited our family the last weekend in January. They were on their way home from a week-long vacation in Sarasota, Florida. When my parents sell the farm, they will probably become Florida "snowbirds".

If you are running short on time to cook a fruit filling for a dessert, and opt to use canned filling, add a little lemon juice and white sugar; it will taste better!

A request was given to me for quick and easy recipes.

Quick Sloppy Joes
1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbeque sauce
2 T. brown sugar
Brown ground beef, drain. Add other ingredients in frying pan. Add a handful of quick oatmeal if too thin, and let set for five minutes.

Hot Chicken Salad Sandwiches
3 13oz. canned chicken with liquid
1 can cream of chicken soup
1/2 pack of Saltine crackers, crumbled
Mix all ingredients together in baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Can also be done in microwave, Cook on High for 10-15 minutes. Serve on sandwich buns or bread.

Apple Dumplings
2 packaged pie crusts
4 apples
brown sugar
cinnamon
Cut each pie crust in four sections. Peel and cut apples in half, put half apple on pie crust section. Sprinkle brown sugar in apple, bring pie crust corners up over apple to cover. Place in 9x13 baking dish, repeat until all crust-wrapped apples are in pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon, pour sauce into pan.
Sauce:
1/4 cup margarine
1 cup brown sugar
3 to 4 cup water
Put ingredients into saucepan, heat until boiling, cook for 5 minutes. Add to baking dish. Bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.

Strawberry Angel Food Cake
1 package angel food cake mix
1 1/4 cups strawberry flavored carbonated beverage
1/4 cup honey
Prepare cake mix according to package directions, except substitute soda and honey for the water. Bake as directed, adding 7-10 minutes. Remove from oven and set upside-down until cooled.
