It sounds like a vacation, but it's really a mission! --Dawn Mast You may have received a letter several weeks ago about supporting the Mast and Pence families as they prepare for a trip to Jamaica. Now you may be asking yourself why the church should support two doctors' families who are obviously going to the Caribbean for a vacation, but calling it "missions". That's what a lot of people think, but the area where these families are serving will not be the Caribbean most people think of with white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. Both doctors Mast (serving from June 7-21) and Pence (serving the first 2 weeks of July) will be working at the Joyland clinic in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. Currently Dr. Omar Beiler is the only physician there and he needs two physicians to cover his practice while he and his wife travel to the USA. Doctor Beiler has a tremendous medical ministry to the people of Jamaica. He starts his day at 8:00 AM and usually does not arrive back home until after dark. His day consists of diagnosing illness, treating sprains, examining babies and children, making house calls and most of all praying for and with those who come to him seeking healing. Doctors Mast and Pence will be serving in some of these same ways while in Jamaica in addition to carrying much needed medication and supplies to this tiny mountain clinic. Both the Mast and Pence families will be traveling with their children and they recognize this as a tremendous opportunity to show these little hearts that there are people who love God and are trying to follow Jesus, but are facing incredible poverty, illness and strife. Although the Caribbean seems an unlikely place to send missionaries, it is where there is an open door, and behind it, a tremendous need. Supporting these families financially is desired, but most of all being uplifted in prayer is the most important. Please pray for safe travels for these families, wisdom for the physicians as they encounter some unfamiliar illnesses and select appropriate treatments, and that God's hand will be upon the Mast's and Pence's as they answer His call. |

Lewis and Clark 2003 --Elwood Yoder Many of you already know about a trip that three of us from Zion are going on during the month of June. Radell Schrock, Nate Yoder and I are traveling west to retrace the Lewis and Clark trail, June 4-July 1. We will be camping in state and national parks most nights, and by day we will be visiting historic sites along the Lewis and Clark trail, from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean. A group of staff from EMHS and 22 students are making the trip. Our mission is to study the history of the original expedition of 1803-1806, to study issues of sustainability and land management, and to work together in faith development and community building. Myron Blosser and I are leaders of the expedition--he is “Meriwether Lewis” and I am “William Clark.” We ask for your prayers for safety and stamina during June. I hope I can survive sleeping out in a tent for about a month. You can follow our travels at lewisandclark2003.net

Girls' club sleepover --Susan Stoltzfus The Girls' Club met together for their annual sleepover at the church on May 16-17. The girls that attended this special event were: Kristen Myers, Heather Vaccaro, Anna Gant, Kaitlin Stauffer, Hannah Stoltzfus, Rebecca Pence, Katherine Pence, Joslyn Vaccaro, Emily Myers, Emily Vaccaro, Olivia Resto, Chloe Shrock, Jessa Tobin, Lauren Silveria, Madeline Hostetler, and Elizabeth Resto. We started out our evening with a scavenger hunt organized by Marci Myers. Three teams roamed the church in search of items that began with each letter of the alphabet. After completing the scavenger hunt, the girls enjoyed the following activities: • Making soft pretzels (with topping choices of salt or cinnamon/sugar/icing---yum!) with Lori Gant • Decorating a t-shirt (using fabric paint and jewels) with Amy Shrock • Getting a manicure with Diane Emswiler and Sarah Piper (Note: Some girls had each fingernail painted a different color!) • Making a gel candle with Susan Stoltzfus Marci Myers and Steph Resto assisted with these activities as well. Next on our agenda was our traditional campfire. With lights dimmed and candles lit, we sang songs, discussed the importance of spending time with God, and prayed for the many requests mentioned by the girls. Then it was popcorn and movie time, in which Marci and Susan had hopes that the girls would all nod off to sleep! However, all the girls were still awake at the end of the movie! Perhaps it was the smell of burnt popcorn (thanks to Susan) that kept them awake? After many giggles, the girls eventually fell asleep, with most of them sleeping in the fellowship hall. We're thankful to Amy and Steph for spending the night with us to help supervise. Morning dawned all too soon. Sleepy-eyed girls awoke, ate donuts and fruit, packed their bags, and posed for photos in their newly decorated t-shirts! We got the Fellowship Hall back into shape in no time, thanks to Dabney Vaccaro and Celah Pence, who both came in early to help with clean up. Thus ended the annual Girls' Club Sleepover for 2003!

In the fall she will attend Blue Ridge Community College and enroll in the nursing program. I would like to thank the Zion congregation for all the love and support they have provided me over the last several years, especially my youth leaders and members of the MYF, my mentor, and my family. Home with Amy --Amy Shrock The month of May has been very busy! Our family traveled to Ohio to visit relatives, and to see the new twins, born to Jimmy's brother John, and wife Kelly. The twins were born 8 weeks early, but are doing well. The girls and I stayed an extra two days to attend a mother/daughter banquet. The theme was "Changes in a Woman's Life", and my mom spoke about being a grandma. Special occasions are so meaningful when you don't live close to family. The Girls Club had a sleepover at the church; Chloe and I participated. The girls kept busy making gel candles, getting their nails polished, making soft pretzels, and decorating a T-shirt with fabric paint, stamps and jewels. We had a very enjoyable time! We announced that our house in Park View was for sale, and sold it five days later! Ken and Judy Nafziger, with their 3 children, purchased the house and will be moving from Pennsylvania in June. Ken is the new Vice President for Student Life at EMU. Our family has found a house (an answer to prayer!) in Broadway on 3rd Street. The next few weeks we will be very busy; Eunice Kratz and I will be catering the Senior reception at EMHS on May 31, plus packing and moving by June 14! Next month's column will feature Lori Gant, who has graciously agreed to share some of her recipes. It is strawberry season; here are some recipes to enjoy them! Busy Day Cake 1 2/3 c. all-purpose flour or 2 c. cake flour 1 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 2 ½ tsp. baking powder 1/3 c. margarine 1 egg 2/3 c. milk 1 tsp. vanilla Mix all ingredients together. Pour in a greased square pan, bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes. While cake is baking, mix together: 3 Tbls. melted butter 4 Tbls. cream 2/3 c. brown sugar ½ c. shredded coconut (optional) Spread mixture on cake while it is warm, do not remove cake from pan. Put cake under broiler until frosting begins to bubble. Serve with mashed sugared strawberries and milk. Strawberry Pie Cloud Light Pancakes |
