African adventures
--Joanna Goins

On August 10, I will fly to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe with two EMU cross-cultural friends, and thus embark on a new, exciting adventure. Arriving on the 11th, I will spend the next week attending the Mennonite World Conference, meeting Mennonites from all around the world. Following MWC, I will spend two weeks in Swaziland with an Eastern Mennonite Missions GO! Team. We will be in a rural village, working with a local church ministering to families who have lost loved ones to AIDS.

After visiting Kruger National Park with the GO! Team, I will travel with my friends to Cape Town, South Africa, where we will meet up with our EMU cross-cultural group. We will live with host families in Cape Town for seven weeks, learning about the culture and volunteering with a social service agency. The last month of the cross-cultural will be spent in Durban and traveling around other parts of South Africa. Following several days of debriefing in Johannesburg, we will return to Harrisonburg on December 5.

I would like to thank everyone at Zion for your prayers and financial support. It is a comforting thought to know that I have a wonderful church family praying for me while I am traveling. My e-mail address is goinsj@emu.edu, and e-mails are welcome!

Blessings, Joanna

June news
--June Lantz

I returned to Luoyang, Henan in February to study Chinese and to teach English. The semester was different because of the SARS epidemic. We were asked not to leave Luoyang. The students were forced to stay on campus until a couple of weeks before the end of the semester. We are allowed to travel again at the end of the semester. Another thing that was different was going to church. At the beginning of the SARS scare I didn’t go because I was told to avoid large crowds of people. Later the church was closed to keep the people from getting together in large groups. This summer I am going to Beijing to be with other CEE teachers for language study and we usually have times of worship. I am looking forward to that.

This semester was interesting! I taught 12 periods of oral English and was tutored six periods of Chinese every week.

Next year I will be moving back to Zhengzhou. I am getting a little tired of moving. I will be teaching at the same university that I was at a year ago. There might be another CEE teacher there and other CEE teachers at another university in Zhengzhou.

MYF Reflections on the Atlanta 2003 Mennonite Youth Convention

Here are a few of my highlights: nearly passing out after giving blood, watching a diverse group of children play in an interactive fountain, attending a small prayer meeting in the morning, feeding popcorn to really big goldfish in the convention center, watching fireworks, and spending time with different people everyday. – Robin Fletcher

It gave me a new appreciation for what I have, because we had to walk by all the bums everyday. – John Jacobs

I liked all the options there were during free time. You could play any game you could think of, ride the escalators, try to catch fish with your bare hands, or collect all the free stuff. You could never get bored. – Steven Stauffer

One of my favorite experiences in Atlanta was listening to Tony Campolo and Mike Yaconelli. The Braves game was the most fun, though. – Krissy Snader

The thing that impressed me most was that Tony Campolo was the only person out of 10 total speakers to invite everyone, including homosexuals, to the table. – Jesse Morris

I enjoyed the seminars more than I enjoyed the worship songs, except for the hymns. This convention taught me respect for others and the joy or worshipping together. – Aaron Yutzy

This trip helped me to get to know some of the youth even better and I had a lot of fun with them all. They are all very great people and I am glad that I am able to be a part of this group of youth. I also had fun going out on the town. – Sarah Gant

The views expressed were very different from any I had heard before. Mike Yaconelli was cool. He told it like it was, church should keep you awake, not put you to sleep. – Jason Lantz

Atlanta 2003 Youth Conference gave me the opportunity to see how the Mennonite youth are committed and thriving. I enjoyed the chance to hear encouragement and interact with other youth, while learning what it means to be a Christian. – Nate Yoder

I had a great time on the trip. I liked Mike Yaconelli, Luke Hartman, and Tony Campolo the best. A-Junction and Recreation were also fun, as was the baseball game. The small group sessions were fun. – Tyler Hernley

Two of the highlights that I experienced in Atlanta were when Sarah, Alisha and I drummed for peace one night before the worship session, and also going to the Atlanta Braves game in the Braves’ stadium. – Maria Yoder

Four hours of sleep each night – woo hoo! - Laura Lehman

Atlanta gave me a new perspective on life. And I feel as though it made me realize what’s most important, and appreciate what I have, and accept others for what they are, and try to love them like Jesus would. – Mark Brenneman

Some of my most enjoyable moments were watching fireworks on the 4th, having worship services with 5,000 youth twice a day, walking around trying to find my partner (#175), getting to meet lots of new people from all over the country, giving blood for my first time, running through the fountains with Laura at the park, and having our youth group party Monday night (even thought the pizza didn’t get there ‘til 1:00am). – Alisha Risser

I’m so glad I decided to come to Atlanta. I really felt I grew closer to God. I was needing motivation, and this week restored my soul. A fresh start was what I was aiming for, and I received just that. – Anna Henderson

Atlanta was a blast and I really enjoyed meeting so many new people. – Michael Snader

Hearing the powerful messages from Jimmy Carter, Tony Campolo, Mike Yaconelli and Michelle Hershberger, worshipping with over 5,000 youth, and experiencing God’s presence within the larger church were incredible experiences. But the best times for me were spent getting to know our youth in new ways, as we walked, talked, laughed, ate, worshipped and prayed together. – Sarah Bixler

Home with Amy
--Amy Shrock

The summer is passing by so quickly! We are settled in our rental house in Broadway, and life is basically back to normal. I enjoy the small-town life here in Broadway, but I miss my garden. We will turn over sod in the spring to make a new garden.

We took our little family camping to Brandywine, and the Resto girls, Olivia and Elizabeth, joined us. Our family loves to camp; you can feel and see God everywhere in nature. In the evening, sitting around the campfire, the silence of the woods surrounds you, and brings a peaceful quietness to your soul.

Our family vacation is coming soon; we are going to Canada for a week with some of my relatives. My sister, Claudia and her family will be there too. We are looking forward to spending time with family.

Thank you, Lori, for writing last month. I love the Oatmeal bread! It is a big hit in the Shrock house! The peach season is here, here are some recipes to enjoy:

Peach Pie
3/4 c. sugar
1/3 c. flour
2 Tbls. soft butter
1/2 c. evaporated milk
5-6 peaches, peeled and halved

Combine sugar, flour and butter to make crumbs. Sprinkle half of mixture into unbaked pie shell. Slice peaches onto the mixture, cover with remaining crumbs. Pour milk over top. Bake as is, or top with lattice or top crust. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes, 350 for 25 minutes.

Peach Freezer Jam
6 c. diced peaches
6 c. sugar
1 20 oz. crushed pineapple
2 small boxes orange Jell-O

Put pineapple in blender, then add to peaches and sugar in saucepan. Cook for 20 minutes, add orange Jell-O. Delicious!!!

Frozen Fruit Slush
2 c. sugar
3 c. water
1 6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate
1 20 oz. crushed pineapple
8 bananas

Fresh fruit: peaches, blueberries, strawberries, nectarines, grapes (your preference)
Mix sugar and water, boil to dissolve. Add frozen concentrate. Pour into large bowl, add fruit. Pour into 2 9 x 13 pans. Freeze.
* I use individual containers to pour fruit mixture into for packed lunches or a healthy snack.

Correction: In the July Home with Amy column, the instructions for baking the whole-wheat bread are bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Turn down heat to 300 degrees and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Relief sale auction items
The auction is the single largest component of the Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale with proceeds of $90,000–$110, 000. In order to have a successful sale, we need persons willing to donate sewing, art and wood items. If you will be donating something this year, please take a form from the table in the foyer and return it to Bob and Betty Lou Buckwalter or Eric and Peggy Brubaker, Congregational Relief Sale Representatives. We would like to get the list of items as soon as possible so we can advertise the items on the Relief Sale website, www.vareliefsale.com.
Daphna community picnic
--Carlene Lantz

We will be holding our 5th annual Daphna Community Picnic on Saturday, September 13th here at the church. This year we are excited about having our own Daphna Creek band as our main entertainment for the evening. Other activities for the evening are the chicken BBQ meal, children's games (planned by the MYF!), face painting, and door prize drawings.

Our purpose for the event is a time of fellowship between the Zion congregation and the families living in the Daphna community. It's a great opportunity to meet new people and get reacquainted with others we do not see on a regular basis.

Do you have the gift of gab and like socializing? Are you a friendly and inviting person? Then I have a job for you! I need about 6 or so people to visit our neighbors in the Daphna community and invite them to our picnic. Visits should begin by the last week in August. Let me know by August 9th if you are interested in being a visitor.

As usual, we would like you to bring two generous food items to accompany the meal. Be thinking about door prizes (children and adult) for the evening. Homemade goodies and gift certificates are always popular. This will be an outdoor event and you are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. If rain is threatening all activities will be held indoors (including children's games).

The New Millennium Players of the Everett Church of the Brethren of Everett, Pennsylvania will present the play. Dates and locations are:
