Alisha in Harrisburg
--Alisha Risser

Hello! I am having a wonderful time here at the Harrisburg Discipleship Center. I have finished one month of training, and still have two more months to go. The time has really gone by fast with such a busy schedule that they keep us on. We have sessions every Monday -Thursday
mornings, and also in the evening twice a week. The topics vary daily, but some of my favorite teachings have been on Biblical Truth, and Holy Spirit Empowerment. I also really enjoyed a Silent Retreat that we went on Sept. 15-16. They took us to Blue Mountain Camp, and we weren't allowed to talk for 24 hours. I had an incredible time, and just realized how much noise we fill our lives with daily.

Every Tuesday and Thursdays our team goes to a local church to help out with the after school program, called Center For Champions. It has been a challenge at times to work with inner city kids, but I know God is working in the kids through us.

Thank you for all your support, and for keeping me in your prayers. I also appreciate those who are keeping me posted on all that's going on back home. Blessings to you all! Love, Alisha

Gift and Thrift--Gifts of Caring Campaign
--Dewey Brenneman, Zion’s representative

As you watch world news and see refugee camps full of desperate people, do you wish you could help? Would you like to go to a camp in Iraq and hand out food to a family who has lost everything? Or how about going to South Africa to minister to aids victims?

You can go there and lots of other needy places all over the world by responding to Gifts Of Caring. Gift and Thrift is running out of space on North Main St. so we are in the process of recycling the old Carr Tire Building on Mt. Clinton Pike.

You will soon be given the opportunity to contribute to the Gifts Of Caring campaign to renovate this building. We’re asking you to make any size gift you can. Your donation will keep giving over and over as checks from our enlarged store go to MCC to help the most needy places in the world where you may never go personally. You’ll get more details in your Sunday School class or in your Church mailbox.

Hayride
--Dawn Mast

Zion congregation is invited to Larry and Marilyn Yoder's for a hayride on Saturday October 25th at 4:00 pm.

Everyone needs to bring their own hot dogs, buns, finger foods to share, chairs or blankets and any games (Frisbee, soccer, football, Twister, Chess etc....) they might want to play. There will be cups, drinks and utensils provided. Also-please sign up on the sheet located outside the women's bathroom so Larry knows how many hay wagons to get.

Autumn vespers
--Welby Showalter

Sunday evening, Oct. 26, 2003 at 7:00 p.m, there will be lots of congregational singing and some poetry on the theme of eventide, twilight, sundown, etc. Some special music is also planned, something old and something new, a good variety to satisfy every taste. Come out for an evening of singing songs that we rarely get a chance to sing because we don't have that many evening meetings.

Women’s retreat
--Diane Emswiler

Be sure and mark your calendar for the weekend of March 26-27. All women at Zion are invited to come to the Wingate Inn in Winchester to spend time together. More details will come later.

Congratulations

• to Michael Snader for being selected Student Athlete of the Week by WHSV TV.

• to Philip Yoder for being recognized as a person who represents the six-pillars of character (respect, responsibility, caring, citizenship, trustworthiness, fairness) by a classmate. Character Counts is a program promoted by the Rockingham County Public Schools. Philip received a Pillars in Person award at a ceremony on Court Square.

Welcome to Zion’s new members…
Amy and Jimmy Shrock

Thanks A Heap

• to Welby and Sharon Showalter for hosting another enjoyable barn party!

Daphna Community Picnic
--Carlene Lantz

Many of us gathered together on September 13 for our fifth annual Daphna Community Picnic. Even though the weather wasn't ideal we still had an enjoyable evening fellowshipping together. Once again many willing workers came together to make the event successful.

Thanks to our new hospitality committee for organizing and serving the food. Ron and Myrna Piper, Bob and Betty Lou Buckwalter and Tim Schmoyer jumped right in and did a wonderful job. Thanks to the guys who barbecued the chicken, Wes Showalter and Stephen Lantz.
Our emcee was Grant Stotlzfus who provided some trivia questions about the area for us (do you remember how high Round Hill is?). Eric and Peggy Brubaker provided musical entertainment before the meal and Daphna Creek after the meal. We enjoyed the touching song written in honor of Ray Kuykendall. Our friendly greeters for the evening were Jim and Gerry Rush who helped make everyone feel welcome.

Thanks also to Sarah Bixler and the youth for organizing the children's activities of games and face painting. Jesse Morris and Laura Lehman were popular artists who were kept busy, even working through supper.
Our troop of visitors made contact with our Daphna neighbors by personally inviting people who live in the community. Visitors were Mark and Dawn Mast, Doug and Kathy Alderfer, Anne Juarez, Dave Lantz, Clyde Kratz and Carlene Lantz. Thanks for the time you took prior to the picnic for this important connection.

The greatest appreciation goes out to all who participated in our evening by being present, bringing food (it's always a good feeling to have more than needed), or donating door prizes. I hope that each of us from the congregation had some sort of contact with a community person who is not a regular attendee and that all were blessed by it.

Prayer for our students
--Joann Henderson

Do you have a child attending one of the local northern Rockingham County public elementary, middle or high schools? If so, join moms in praying for these children and their schools (including the other students, teachers, staff, and administrators).

We meet each Mon. at 8:30 a.m. at Sunset United Methodist Church (beside John C. Myers Elementary in Broadway) for one hour of prayer each week. If you are unable to attend and have specific prayer requests let us know but we would love to have you join us. We are part of a larger network of praying moms called Moms in Touch. For those of you in other areas we have contact information for you if you'd like to join your local group. Questions? call Joann Henderson at 896-3209

Home with Amy
--Amy Shrock

Fall is descending on us--bring it on! The crisp cold air, color-changing leaves, bright yellows, vibrant oranges, and deep reds, are like pie and ice cream for the eyes and senses. This season always puts me in the mood to bake cookies, cakes, breads, and pies with warm smells like pumpkin, ginger, and molasses.

I believe that the fall season must be one of God's favorite canvases to paint in the Shenandoah Valley. I have always loved this season, but have never experienced such awesome beauty as our mountains hold.

My parents are coming down for the second weekend in October for Drew's birthday, watch Drew and Chloe play soccer, and enjoy fall. We are very excited for them to come, we haven't seen them for over four months.

Next month I would like to do a feature on meals in 30 minutes or less from all of you. Please email me your recipes at Bishtdufishing@aol.com.

Easy Snickerdoodles (recipe from Steph Resto)
1 butter yellow cake mix
½ c. oil
2 eggs
Mix together. Roll balls of dough in the following:
½ c. white sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
Bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Makes 3-4 doz.
(*Note: I substituted margarine for the oil.)

Ginger Cookies
1 ½ c. margarine
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
½ c. molasses
Mix and add slowly:
4-4 ½ c. flour
3 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. ginger
2 tsp. cinnamon
Chill dough for 1 hour. Form into balls and roll in white sugar. Bake at 350 for 10-12 min. Do not over bake. Makes 6 doz.

Mom's Pumpkin Pie
8 eggs, 4 separated and egg whites beaten stiff
½ c. flour
2 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 29 oz. Libby's canned pumpkin
3 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
2 cans evaporated milk
3 cups milk
Beat egg whites, set aside. Heat milk but do not boil. Mix all the other ingredients; add hot milk and beaten egg whites last. Bake at 400 for 15 min., 350 for 25 min. Makes 3 pies.

Mint Chocolate Cake (recipe from Barbara Risser)
2½ c. sifted flour
1 ½ c. sugar
½ tsp. baking powder
1 ½ tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
½ c. cocoa or carob powder
Sift together and add:
2/3 c. canola or your favorite oil
and ½ of the following:
1 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
Mix well and add remaining water plus
3 eggs and beat 2 minutes
Pour into two 9-inch pans or large sheet cake pan
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes
We often use carob powder for those who are allergic to chocolate. The product is fragrant and moist.
When cooled, use a confection sugar icing with ¼ tsp. peppermint oil for flavor. Not unlike a peppermint patty!
