Thanks be to God
Who gives us bread
Thanks be to God!
Amen

God is great and He is good
And we thank Him for our food
By His hand we all are fed
Give us Lord our daily bread.
Amen

For health and strength and daily food
We praise thy name, Oh Lord!
Amen

Thank you God for this food
Bless the hands who made it good
And let us serve you better.
Amen

Some have meat and cannot eat
Some would eat but have not
But we have meat and we CAN eat
And the Lord be thank-ed.
Amen

Thank you God for milk and bread
And other things so good
Thank you God for those who helped
To grow and cook my food.

Zion's art and craft show
--Martha Whissen
This was truly a show! There were no price tags anywhere. The purpose of the show was to display unknown talent within the congregation. And what a show it was! Just bring something you had crafted. The weekend of September 6-7, 1986 was sponsored by the WMSC. The ladies brought their quilts, knitting and crochet pieces. There were pillows, hooked chair mats, and embroidery. Men brought their woodworking. Vic Alger brought a deerskin leather jacket he had made, complete with fringe. Norman Kreider, a Zion member at that time brought a contraption he had made which did dreadful things if you put money into it! J. P. Alger took his pony's shoes and made candleholders. No food was allowed since it might spoil the creations. Since the lock on the basement door had recently been tampered with, two brave sisters spent the night in one of the Sunday school rooms. They were not armed guards! They report that they did not sleep well. Our sister church, Trissels, was invited to attend. There were things displayed that showed skill, imagination and dexterity of fellow members. It was a great weekend. If you want to see pictures, Retha has photos in the scrapbook, which verify these facts.

Hayride

--Dawn Mast

Zion congregation is invited to Larry and Marilyn Yoder's for a hayride
on Saturday October 25th at 4:00 pm.

Everyone needs to bring their own hot dogs, buns, finger foods to share,
chairs or blankets and any games (Frisbee, soccer, football, Twister,
Chess etc....) they might want to play. There will be cups, drinks and
utensils provided. Also-please sign up on the sheet located outside the
women's bathroom so Larry knows how many hay wagons to get.

Autumn vespers

--Welby Showalter

Sunday evening, Oct. 26, 2003 at 7:00 p.m, there will be lots of congregational
singing and some poetry on the theme of eventide, twilight, sundown, etc.
Some special music is also planned, something old and something new, a
good variety to satisfy every taste. Come out for an evening of singing
songs that we rarely get a chance to sing because we don't have that many
evening meetings.

Women's retreat

--Diane Emswiler

Be sure and mark your calendar for the weekend of March 26-27. All women
at Zion are invited to come to the Wingate Inn in Winchester to spend
time together. More details will come later.

Congratulations

. to Michael Snader for being selected Student

Welcome to Zion's new members.

Daphna Community Picnic
--Carlene Lantz

Many of us gathered together on September 13 for our fifth annual Daphna Community Picnic. Even though the weather wasn't ideal we still had an enjoyable evening fellowshipping together. Once again many willing workers came together to make the event successful.

Thanks to our new hospitality committee for organizing and serving the food. Ron and Myrna Piper, Bob and Betty Lou Buckwalter and Tim Schmoyer jumped right in and did a wonderful job. Thanks to the guys who barbecued the chicken, Wes Showalter and Stephen Lantz.
Our emcee was Grant Stotlzfus who provided some trivia questions about the area for us (do you remember how high Round Hill is?). Eric and Peggy Brubaker provided musical entertainment before the meal and Daphna Creek after the meal. We enjoyed the touching song written in honor of Ray Kuykendall. Our friendly greeters for the evening were Jim and Gerry Rush who helped make everyone feel welcome.

Thanks also to Sarah Bixler and the youth for organizing the children's activities of games and face painting. Jesse Morris and Laura Lehman were popular artists who were kept busy, even working through supper.
Our troop of visitors made contact with our Daphna neighbors by personally inviting people who live in the community. Visitors were Mark and Dawn Mast, Doug and Kathy Alderfer, Anne Juarez, Dave Lantz, Clyde Kratz and Carlene Lantz. Thanks for the time you took prior to the picnic for this important connection.

The greatest appreciation goes out to all who participated in our evening by being present, bringing food (it's always a good feeling to have more than needed), or donating door prizes. I hope that each of us from the congregation had some sort of contact with a community person who is not a regular attendee and that all were blessed by it.

Prayer for our students
--Joann Henderson

Do you have a child attending one of the local northern Rockingham County public elementary, middle or high schools? If so, join moms in praying for these children and their schools (including the other students, teachers, staff, and administrators).

We meet each Mon. at 8:30 a.m. at Sunset United Methodist Church (beside John C. Myers Elementary in Broadway) for one hour of prayer each week. If you are unable to attend and have specific prayer requests let us know but we would love to have you join us. We are part of a larger network of praying moms called Moms in Touch. For those of you in other areas we have contact information for you if you'd like to join your local group. Questions? call Joann Henderson at 896-3209

Home with Amy

--Amy Shrock

What a busy month October has been, and the holidays haven't even arrived! My parents came down on a weekend for Drew's birthday and brought Concord grapes from their arbor. My mom and I canned 42 quarts of grape juice. Our family is enjoying the delicious fruits of our labor!
The past week has been busy with fall activities involving our church family. One of our family's favorite annual outings with the church is the evening spent at Larry and Marilyn Yoder's farm. I think a lot of other folks also enjoy it as much as we do!
With our busy lives, we still value the time spent together, gathered around the dinner table. When time is short to prepare your family's meal, try the recipes included. All are prepared, cooked, and ready to serve in 30 minutes or less.

Easy Beef Stroganoff (Steph Resto)
1 lb. ground beef
1 can Cream of mushroom soup
16 oz. container sour cream
8 oz. cream cheese
1 pkg. noodles
Brown ground beef, drain. Add soup, sour cream and cream cheese; cook until all are heated and bubbly. Cook noodles as directed on package. Pour sauce on top of noodles and enjoy!

One Skillet Chicken Dish (Steph Resto)
4 skinned, boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
1 13 oz. chicken broth
2 c. uncooked macaroni
12 oz. Velveeta, cubed
10 oz. chopped frozen broccoli, thawed
Spray skillet with non-stick cooking spray. Cook chicken on medium high heat until no longer pink. Add broth and bring to boil. Stir in macaroni, reduce heat to low. Simmer 8-10 minutes until macaroni is tender. Add cheese and broccoli, stir until cheese is melted.
Variation: Substitute Oriental Raman noodles (use flavor packet) for macaroni. Substitute ham chunks for chicken, omit cheese.

Black Bean Soup
3 cans(15 oz. each) black beans, undrained
2 c. chicken broth
1 Tbsp. oil
1 small onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
16 oz. salsa
2 Tbsp. lime juice
1 Tbsp. ground cumin
1/2 to 1 tsp. crushed red pepper
Blend beans with liquid and chicken broth in blender or food processor.( I like it chunky) Sauté' garlic and onion in saucepan until tender. Add other ingredients, bring to a boil. Reduce heat, let soup simmer. Serve with tortilla chips.
Garnish suggestions: chopped red onion, fresh cilantro, shredded cheese, dollop of sour cream
*Chicken quesadillas or tacos are delicious served with this soup!

Deer or Beef Stew
1 quart canned venison or beef (fresh meat can also be used, cooking time will be longer)
2-3 cups water
1 pint canned carrots
4 potatoes, diced and cooked
1 quart canned green beans
1 package dry Lipton Beefy Onion
1 Tbsp. rosemary
1 Tbsp. parsley flakes
salt and pepper to taste
Put canned meat into saucepan, add water, salt and pepper, rosemary, parsley flakes and seasoning packet. Bring to a boil, add carrots, potatoes, and green beans. Cook on med. heat for 10 minutes, thicken with ˝ c. cornstarch mixed with ˝ c. water. Serve over rice or noodles. A family favorite!
*Hint: Purchase precooked diced potatoes (not frozen) to cut down prep time.
